Frequently asked Questions
What is Counselling and how can it help me?
Counselling offers a safe, supportive space to explore what’s happening in your life. It can help you better understand your thoughts and emotions, work through challenges, and develop greater self-awareness and emotional resilience. Counselling is not about being “fixed” — it’s about being heard, supported, and gently guided toward clarity, healing, and personal growth.
How do I know if Counselling is right for me?
You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from counselling. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, disconnected, or simply wanting support through a life transition, counselling may be helpful. Many people seek counselling because they want a space to talk openly, reflect, and feel supported — even if they’re unsure exactly what they need.
How does the first session work?
The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. It's ok to feel nervous or a bit uncertain. We’ll have a relaxed conversation about what's brought you to counselling and what issues you'd like to address. You can share as much detail with me as you like and raise any questions or concerns you may have. We move at your pace, with your comfort and safety prioritised. My role is to gain an understanding of your feelings, thoughts and current frame of mind.
Duration of sessions and how often will me meet?
Sessions are typically 50 minutes in length. How often we meet depends on your individual needs and preferences. Some people attend weekly or fortnightly, while others choose a more flexible arrangement. We can review this together as we go.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no set number of sessions. Some people find a few sessions are enough to make progress with their goals, while others choose to engage in longer-term counselling. We will regularly check in about how counselling is feeling for you and adjust as needed.
What type of Counselling approaches do you use?
I provide a warm, non-judgemental, empathetic, and genuine space where the client can explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences at their own pace. I offer a person-centred approach - rather than giving advice or directing the session, I listen deeply and support the client to gain insight, build self-awareness, and move toward their own solutions. I utilise Solution-focused and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy along with other therapeutic frameworks.
Is Counselling confidential?
Yes. Counselling is confidential, and your privacy is very important to me. What you share in sessions is not disclosed to others without your consent. There are some legal and ethical limits to confidentiality. These include situations where there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or where disclosure is required by law. If you have any concerns about confidentiality I'm happy to discuss these with you.
Are you a registered/accredited Counsellor?
Yes. I am a professionally trained Counsellor and accredited with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA). This ensures I work in accordance with their ethical guidelines, high professional standards and ongoing professional development requirements.
Do you offer Medicare Rebates?
Unfortunately Counselling services are not Medicare-rebatable. Some private health insurers may offer rebates for counselling depending on your policy. Please contact your insurer directly to confirm your coverage and any provider requirements.
What if I don't feel comfortable or it doesn't feel like a good fit?
If at any time it doesn’t feel like the right fit, you are free to stop or talk openly about your concerns. You are always encouraged to prioritise what feels best for your wellbeing. If you decide a change is required, I can assist you in finding someone more suitable for your needs.
How will I know if you're the right Health Professional to support me?
It’s essential to both of us that we are a therapy match hence why I offer a 20 min free of charge initial meeting (to discuss needs and goals) and see if we share an emotional connection that’s vital for successful counselling.
Sessions in person (in my office or local café/park), via Zoom or walk and talk option.
You may find it helpful to notice how you feel when reading my website, or during our initial meeting — feeling heard, respected, and at ease are important signs. You’re welcome to ask questions at any time to help you decide whether this feels like the right support for you. Creating a supportive and trustworthy environment is the cornerstone of my work.
What is your cancellation policy?
I understand schedules can change and things come up last minute. I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Late cancellations or no-shows will incur the full session fee.
This policy helps ensure appointment times remain available and supports the sustainability of the practice.
What should I do in case of emergency?
If you are in crisis or experiencing an emergency, please contact Emergency Services by dialling 000.
